This study is set out to examine aggression of women characters in selected literary
works of Said Ahmed Mohamed. Aggression is a hostile behaviour that intends to hurt
somebody else intentionally.
It affects a person physically, emotionally and psychologically. This behaviour can be
caused by frustration, violence, bad governance, discrimination, oppression and poverty
among others, have been analyzed and portrayed in the novels. The objective of the
research is to identify the causes and effects of aggression of women in the selected
texts of Said A.Mohamed. Research has been done on the status of women in the society.
Many women have been oppressed and this has resulted to women aggression. However,
this problem of aggression has not been researched on in Said Ahmed Mohamed works.
This study intended to find out whether oppression of women could serve as a pointer
that paved way to women aggression. This research was guided by the tenets of
Feminism theory and its strands namely radical feminism, social feminism and liberal
feminism. The sampling procedure used was purposeful sampling. Three selected novels
of Said A.Mohamed were studied. These were: Utengano, Nyuso za mwanamke na Tata
za Asumini. The researcher chose these three novels to identify whether they portray
aspects of aggression and again they were written in different decades. Through them its
clear to notice the changes women have undergone particularly in the most recent
selected novel- Nyuso za Mwanamke (2010). The research was done in the library where
the three novels were studied in detail. The researcher purposefully sampled ten (10)
women characters from the selected novels who were analyzed for elements of
aggression and its effects. Works of other scholars related to the topic of research,
journals and the internet were of much help in giving more information concerning the
topic. This formed the main data of this research. The data was analyzed using qualitative
descriptive method. The findings of this study clearly points out aggression of women
and its effects which are either positive or negative. It is hoped that the study will be
useful to students and researchers of Swahili literature on aggression of women in literary
works. |
